New York City’s “it girl” culture is all the rage right now, and aspiring cool girls are struggling to keep their finger on the pulse. Last week’s hottest brand is suddenly cheugy, and fads that once permeated the West Village streets are now a distant memory. With trends changing more often than the price of a Zero Bond membership, it can be difficult to know what’s so hot and what’s so not.
To be fluent is to be in the know and ahead of the curve, and no two people embody that more than celebrity wardrobe stylists Danielle O'Connell and Alix Gropper (otherwise known as Danielle & Alix). Celebrated for their signature tomboy chic aesthetic, D&A are the ultimate cool girls.
This powerhouse duo is responsible for some of the most iconic looks of the season, from RHONY star Erin Lichy’s nearly-naked Christopher Esber dress to DWTS veteran Jenna Johnson’s ab-baring sequin set and fierce Andamane fur coat. With a client roster more stacked than your Spinelli ring collection (they work with Alix Earle and Brianna LaPaglia ), D&A are the future of fashion.
Always at the forefront of the cultural conversation, here are D&A’s 10 things that are really fucking fluent.
We just came back from Aspen with Casa Del Sol & Vivrelle, and our mood board was all furry, oversized, almost obnoxious furs. Our very fluent-minded friends Serena Kerrigan, Hallie Batchelder and Liv Manni came along for the ride. Some fur favorites are The Taylor from Andamane, The Dasha from Retrofete and The Dakota from Nour Hammour. While on the topic — let’s throw in a whole fur look. How sick is this set from Aknvas — a designer to watch.
We love the unpredictable shoe theory; pairing an outfit with a shoe that your boyfriend or brother would think is insane is more often than not an elite stylistic choice. Nobody does it better than Alaia; their short and tall boot combo is basically right off the runway. You can definitely find a similar option like these from Lioness.
Slippers. With. Everything. Gone are the days of wearing slippers solely around the house; the right pair of slippers give off the perfect cool-girl energy in an effortless and very comfortable (and warm!) way. The Misha Slippers from Apparis are unreal, along with the Pumped Uggs. We've been eyeing these from JW Anderson for a while too – may just need to hit the trigger. Try styling with a denim or a trouser, even a blazer or puffer coat. Slippers work for any occasion... you’ll be surprised how versatile they can be!
We’ll literally put charms on anything to give a unique twist to an outfit. We saw bag charms all over the Miu Miu & Prada runways last season, and they’re seemingly here to stay. Check out these more affordable options from BonBonWhims, or my favorite insider secret is ShopBagCrap on Instagram — she curates the cutest vintage charms for your bag!
The ultimate cool-girl hack and also smart-girl hack for when you don’t have enough time to do your glam. These literally make everyone look good, promise. Our favorites are Elissa Johnson & Bonnie + Clyde.
They’re that fucking good. Ladies, this is where we invest our dollars – think cost per wear because we truly grab for ours every day. We're going to be purchasing their wide leg in grey immediately, along with their namesake dirty loose fit. And this Halo colorway!!! Obsessed.
The perfect going-out pant is The Trish in Chino, which we launched with A&O after seeing the black embellished fly off the shelves last season. A specialty denim makes getting dressed so easy, because that’s it — that’s the look! Pair with a white tee or simple top, and you’re good to go. Statement pants >>
Ultimate lazy girl ‘fit – throw on a leather jacket and a boot, and you’re somewhat put together for your morning coffee run or hungover Sunday brunch. Heather Grey is our favorite!
She’s distressed, she fits everything, she’s just that girl. Love a hobo bag to throw everything and anything into, including all 9 of my lip products. A great dupe is the Alva Big Bag from Flattered — one of our other favorite brands right now!
Doubling down on #9 – they’ve really nailed fair pricing and classic pieces that are stylish, chic and, importantly, for the city girl, COMFORTABLE. We love the Nour in the sand suede as a perfect transitional boot to spring and could totally see this styled with a dress or shorts.
